To automate sample incubation, headspace generation, collection and injection, Electronic Nose analyzers can be coupled to autosamplers instead of using manual injection. When volatile compounds are adsorbed onto the surface of the semiconductors this generates a change in the electrical resistance which varies with the type of volatile compound and its concentration. As instruments can include up to 18 cross-selective sensors, the range of solid, liquid or gas samples that can be analyzed is broad. For each sensor the optimum value of resistance is recorded to be used as raw data for processing.
